On May 8, Yang Shiqi, a master’s student from the School of Instrument Science and Engineering, SEU, guided by Associate Professor Huang Kai and supported by the Elite Engineer Training Program led by Prof. Liu Zhiyuan’s team, collaboratively developed a “A Road Intelligent Inspection System Based on LIDAR-Vision Fusion” in partnership with Nanjing Intelligent Transportation Information Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Nanjing Urban Construction Investment Holding (Group) Co., Ltd. With this project, she has passed her master’s degree defense, becoming the first non-specialized fresh professional master’s graduate in China who has applied for a master’s degree based on a practical project.
It is noted that the traditional professional road inspection mode involves high vehicle costs and requires substantial manpower for maintenance. In contrast, the Road Intelligent Inspection System Based on LIDAR-Vision Fusion, developed by Yang Shiqi, features low cost and enables fully automatic automated inspection. The team also designed an intelligent deduplication mechanism, reducing data redundancy by over 90% caused by buses repeatedly traveling the same routes at high frequency. At present, the system has been deployed and operational on three bus routes and one professional inspection vehicle in Nanjing, and has been successfully applied to road support tasks for major events such as the Nanjing Marathon. Its application model, featuring “zero additional fleet expansion, high-frequency coverage, and low-cost operation and maintenance,” has been incorporated into theNanjing Action Plan for Further Advancing the Construction of "AI + Transportation" Application Scenarios. Relevant research achievements won the First Prize of the 2025 Science and Technology Progress Award issued by the China Communications and Transportation Association.
This defense marks a key achievement of the National Graduate College for Elite Engineers in deepening 金沙-enterprise joint cultivation and exploring reforms in the cultivation of elite engineers. The college has gradually established a full-process reform pathway, empowering engineering master’s and doctoral students to engage in real enterprise scenarios and deliver substantive innovative achievements. It also promotes mutual progress between 金沙 and enterprise supervisors, laying a solid foundation for further improving the quality of engineering talent cultivation at the 金沙.
