A delegation led by Mr. Fong Hok-shing, Director of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, recently paid a visit to SEU. Sun Youhong, President of SEU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Liu Jiaping, Chairman of SEU Academic Committee and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Zhong Wenqi, Vice President of SEU, held a symposium with the guests and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation.

Sun Youhong extended a warm welcome to the delegation. He noted that SEU and CEDD have established a solid cooperative foundation and have yielded fruitful outcomes. The two parties have carried out in-depth practical cooperation in fields including ultra-high-performance concrete, semi-flexible asphalt pavement, and the application of marine engineering materials, laying a sound foundation for scientific and technological innovation in infrastructure construction on the mainland and in Hong Kong. Looking ahead, he expressed the hope that the signing of the MoU would serve as a new starting point. Both parties would deepen joint technological research in key areas such as innovative engineering materials, advanced construction technologies, and intelligent monitoring systems, promote the implementation of high-quality research achievements in Hong Kong, and strengthen mutual exchanges and joint cultivation of elite engineers. The two parties would strive to set an example of cooperation between universities and Hong Kong’s infrastructure authorities, and jointly support the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and China’s major strategic initiatives.

FONG Hok-shing remarked that SEU’s profound research strength can effectively introduce cutting-edge mainland technologies to CEDD. Leveraging CEDD’s familiarity with international construction standards and rich practical application experience, the two parties should complement each other’s strengths, jointly build the brand of “Construction in China,” and promote China’s advanced engineering technologies, materials, and products to the global market.
Liu Jiaping introduced the technological innovations and engineering applications of the National Key Laboratory of Infrastructure Engineering Materials. He elaborated on the laboratory’s core technologies and practical applications in five major research directions: ultra-high-performance concrete, rutting-resistant asphalt pavement, crack and seepage prevention for tunnels, low-carbon concrete, and AI-enabled engineering materials.

On behalf of their respective sides, Sun Youhong and FONG Hok-shing signed the MoU to strengthen cooperation in innovative applied engineering materials, advanced engineering technologies, artificial intelligence, and other related fields.
The symposium was attended by relevant officials from the Office of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, the Office of Alumni Services and Foundation Management, as well as the School of Civil Engineering, School of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, and School of Transportation, SEU.
